Report Date:

Abstract:
The Si3N4-SiC composite system was investigated to obtain a better understanding of the effect of microstructure on the three strength controlling factors, viz., fracture energy, elastic modulus and crack size. Three different average particle size dispersions 5 micrometers, 9 micrometers and 32 micrometers of silicon carbide were used to form three composite series within this system. Within each series, composites were formed containing 0.10, 0.20, 0.30 and 0.40 volume fractions of the dispersed silicon carbide phase. These composites were fabricated by hot-pressing. Author
