Abstract:
Dinitrobenzene DNB was investigated as a possible emergency replacement for TNT. DNB is presently produced for non-military use to the extent of about 12 million pounds per year. Charges prepared from DNB gave performance somewhat less than TNT. Problems were encountered in the use of conventional melt-cast methods because fine hair-like crystals floated from the open kettle. The results indicate DNB could be used as an emergency replacement for TNT in large diameter munitions but more effort would be required on processing techniques. Author
