Abstract:

Holographic interferometry was used to find concentration gradients in the electrolyte of a silver-silver perchlorate-silver electrochemical cell. These gradients were then used as the basis for calculation of the diffusion coefficient and the activation energy for silver in silver perchlorate. Based on an Arrhenius plot of these values, the activation energy required for diffusion was found. The object of the work described was to determine the applicability of electrochemical holographic interferometry to battery research. The limitations on the procedure were evaluated and it was concluded that the method could be used to determine diffusion coefficients at electrolyte concentrations of less than 1 molar and with currents of less than 5 masq cm. It was determined that the method can be used as an early screening procedure to evaluate new electrolytes such as those intended for use in lithium batteries where concentrations are characteristically low.
