Abstract:
Samples of crosslinked polyethylene were subjected to artificial weathering in a Weather-ometer apparatus equipped with a sunshine carbon arc radiation source and changes in tensile properties and water vapor transmission rates were observed. The material tested is used in a reuseable container being investigated for Air Force use. The container is presently being used by commercial airlines and conforms to the requirements set forth in specification ATA 300 OF THE Air Transport Association. Test results after 200 hours of Weather-ometer exposure indicate that the material withstands weathering well. Outdoor storage of a container made from this material for up to a year should not reduce the usefulness of the container. The 100 trips planned for this container probably will not provide a total exposure of a years duration and thus the material should be satisfactory for its planned use. Three colors green, natural, and white were tested. The green material proved superior for weathering resistance and is recommended over the other two. Author-PL
