Abstract:
A study was conducted to establish the preliminary design of a low tape speed, highly durable, multichannel sonar-audio recorderreproducer for U.S. Navy Sonarman training. Interim results by analysis and by laboratory experimentation on a partial model of the multichannel electro-optical recorder indicates thus far, that an operational model can be satisfactorily built. The unit records 16 audio channels on 14 inch wide photographic film. This is done by modulating light emitting diodes LEDs with the signal to be recorded. Emitted light from the LEDs is guided onto the film by 0.003 to 0.010 inch diameter optical fiber light guides. Evidence from this study justifies a directed effort toward building a fully operational unit having 450 parallel channels, and a bandwidth of 10 Hz to 10 kHz. Author
