Abstract:

A reflex arc nitrogen plasma in a longitudinal magnetic field has been investigated by means of cylindrical Langmiur probes. Magnetic fields varying from 2400 gauss to 6600 gauss were studied. A radial profile of electron temperature and space potential was obtained as an aid to understanding the inner and outer rotational fluctuations previously noted to be characteristic of the reflex arc column. The effect of crossed magnetic and electric fields resulting in E x B particle drift has been proposed as the primary mechanism of the outer rotational fluctuation, while the inner rotation mechanism has been proposed to be the j x B force of the magnetohydrostatic equation of a plasma in equilibrium.
