Corporate Author:

Report Date:

Abstract:
The report describes theoretical investigations on plasma instabilities appearing in dynamic equilibrium configurations of thermonuclear power and propulsion devices. Zeroth order diffusion velocities due to the geometry of the confining magnetic field and due to the transport properties of the plasma variable in space and time, and the finiteness of these devices introduces new types of instabilities of nonlinear nature. Therefore the nonlinear development of nonperiodic large amplitude disturbances of the field quantities has been investigated for nearly collisionless, collision dominated and magnetohydrodynamic plasmas. The report gives summaries on Helmholtz instabilities, on instabilities in dissipative plasmas, on applying Lyapunovs theory to stability problems in plasma physics, on drift waves, and on micro-instabilities in arbitrary geometrical configurations. Furthermore summaries on the local efficiency of MHD generators and on similarity transformations in magnetogasdynamics are given. Author
