Abstract:

Sources of instability in the calbiration of the dual-cavity refractometer have been examined with the aid of controlled environments and a precision hygrometer. These instabilities are due to vapour adsorption on the cavity surfaces, mean thermal expansion of the coaxial cavities, temperature differential between the open and evacuated cavities, and perturbation of the temperature of the sampled air by the open cavity. Corrections for each of these are given, together with a computing program that permits the present refractometer to indicate air refractivity within the design accuracy. Suggestions are given for use of new materials in the cavities to simplify the analysis of the refractometer signal. The capacitor refractometer has been reconstructed in a form that embodies the recommendations of earlier investigation, in order to minimize errors due to vapour adsorption, mechanical and thermal instabilities.
