Abstract:

The Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea are important areas which supply positive vorticity as well as volume transport to the coastal side of the southern half of the western boundary current Gulf Stream System of the North Atlantic Ocean. Experiments were carried out with scale models of both basins in a circular tank of plexiglass with a diameter of 120 cm mounted on a turntable rotated at speeds between 4 and 8 r.p.m. The water movement was observed by taking time-lapse 16 mm motion pictures of dye for deep and bottom water and paper patches for surface water.
