Abstract:
The intent of the study was to measure the permeability of oil films to water vapor and to relate this property to the oils protective ability. Ther permeation of water vapor through oil films was determined by measuring the surface potential changes as the metaloil interface with the vibrating condenser apparatus. Surface potential data showed the following order of increasing water adsorption for oil solutions containing 2 by weight of metal dinonylnaphthalene sulfonates DNNS CaDNNS, EtDDNNS, BaDNNS, ZnDNNS, NH4DNNS, PbDNNS and NaDNNS. The study showed that surface potentials could be used to distinguish the difference between the metal dinonylnaphthalene sulfonates. Also, the surface potential changes caused by water vapor adsorption was shown to correlate with the protective ability in the humidity cabinet test. Author
