Abstract:
This report is based upon results from a program in which strain gage measurements were made of the elastic properties on various sheet titanium alloys. Methods for computing polycrystalline elastic properties from single crystal values were reviewed and these calculated curves were then compared to the actual test results. It was observed that the anisotropic variations in elastic properties of titanium and its alloys depend upon two factors. The first is the basic elastic anisotropic characteristics of the titanium single crystal, and the second is the intense preferred orientations commonly found in the wrought products. It was also established that moderately accurate predictions of elastic anisotropy can be made for polycrystalline aggregates with elementary textures and that the constant stress model is adequate for describing the behavior patterns found in titanium sheet material.
