Abstract:

The paper concerns the development of a computer model of a general probabilistic intercept problem. The model facilitates the study of the performance of intercept systems of the type that may be used to guide an object into coincidence with a target that is capable of performing random maneuvers about a deterministic path. The class of intercept systems that may be handled consists of those systems that use proportioned navigation guidance methods. The guidance systems may be of the sampled data type. The model developed involves the two-dimensional simulation of the trajectories of a target and an interceptor. The simulation is performed on a digitally controlled high speed analog computer. For a given intercept system configuration, the problem is cycled through a prescribed number of intercept attempts or runs. The frequency of success from the number of runs provides an estimate of the probability of object coincidence. This process is repeated for different system parameter values and the resulting index of performance curve probably of coincidence is analyzed to determine the desired intercept system configuration.
