Abstract:
The relationship of chemical-reaction and vapor-supply mechanisms to propellant sensitivity were studied. The explosive nature of vaporization is qualitatively recognized but not quantitatively appreciated. This is particularly evident with liquids in metastable states, such as superheated or negative pressure conditions. Shock-tube data are being used for the correlation and evaluation of practical performance in several specific propellants. The goal is to develop a capacity for predicting practical performance, outside its specific purpose, in sufficient detail allow an extension to sensitivity problems. Author
