Abstract:

Between May and July 1963, cases of CHF were recorded for the first time in Rostov Oblast. Most of the cases of illness were associated with tickbite or squashing of adult ticks of the species Hyalomma plumbeum plumbeum. Of the 12 patients 9 were milkmaids, 2 workers on a dairy farm, a physician infected in the hospital, and one 6 year old child. Questioning of 101 milkmaids who worked with persons that became ill, showed that 74 of them removed attached as well as unattached ticks from themselves. Attack by most ticks occurred during milking cows. In turn, ticks attacked cows while the herds grazed in ravines overgrown with shrubs and weeds. Author
