Abstract:
The performance of 17 Group IV personnel was compared with that of 30 regular recruit personnel in two classes of the Equipment Operator School, Port Hueneme, California. The classes were conducted in their regular manner, and instructors were not given the identity of Group IV individuals. Two of the Group IV trainees were set back for disciplinary reasons. None of the Group IV trainees failed the course for academic reasons, though their course achievement test scores were lower than those of the regular trainees, especially on written tests. The single curriculum area causing Group IV trainees the most difficulty was mathematics. It appears that no major changes are required to enable Group IV personnel to complete the curriculum of the Equipment Operator Class A School, though the mathematics portion of the curriculum might be further re-examined with a view toward reducing the extensiveness and the complexity of mathematics instruction if this appears warranted with respect to the mathematics actually required of Equipment Operators on the job.
