Abstract:
The paper compares -- functionally as well as structurally -- Americas two foremost alliances NATO and the OAS. The dual purpose is 1 to learn more about alliances in general, and 2 to consider possible changes in one organization in light of the experiences of the other. By comparing two organizations as disparate as NATO and the Organization of American States OAS one may derive new insights about the nature of alliances, just as the sociologist taught us more about political systems by relating primitive and advanced models.
