Abstract:
Analytical expressions for total radiances NV and equivalent widths WV of isolated spectral lines with combined Doppler and collision-broadened profiles are presented for isothermal paths. It is shown that the curves of growth for 0 a 0.5, where aln2 to the 12 power is the ratio of the Lorentz to the Doppler line half-width, can be divided into three regions, depending on optical depth purely Doppler, purely Lorentz, and a transition region between the two for which explicit expressions are given. For a0, only Doppler broadening is effective and the curve of growth is purely Doppler, irrespective of optical depth. For a or 0.5, the curves of growth are shown to be equivalent to purely Lorentz, irrespective of optical depth. Author
