Abstract:

The axisymmetric, transverse magnetic field modes of a hydromagnetic or Alfven waveguide are studied experimentally and theoretically. An experiment was performed to examine with precision measurements the steady-state half-wave resonances of a short section of hydromagnetic waveguide with a liquid metal NaK used as the fluid conductor. The response to a step of current was also examined. The theory of uniform hydromagnetic waveguides is reviewed and extended by reconsideration of the propagation constant and theories for the effects of transverse fields, viscosity, finite conductivity walls, and bulk motion. A theory predicting the effects of nonuniform density or magnetic field is developed and verified in the experiment. Author
