Abstract:

Sulfur hexafluoride reacts with a number of electrically exploded metals to form sulfur tetrafluoride and a metal fluoride. The extent of reaction and the degree of utilization of the imparted electrical energy are shown to be related to reaction energetics and a physical model of the interactions between exploding metals and a surrounding gas. In each of the reactions that has been studied, reaction occurred only to the extent that the metal participated chemically. There was no self-pyrolysis of SF6 molecules, although sufficient energy had been provided for such pyrolysis to occur. The synthesis of PtF2 from exploding Pt and SF6 indicates that this technique offers promise as a method for preparing the lower fluorides of those transition metals that commonly exhibit a number of valences in their halides.
