Abstract:
Efforts were made to assist the Naval Air Training Command in improving the ground training aspects of its aviation training programs. These programs involve at present the training of over a thousand Naval aviators a year. Most of the instructors are Naval aviators, whose tours of duty in the Naval Air Training Command are typically of two years duration. Their flying backgrounds are considerably superior, in general, to their subject-matter backgrounds in the technical supporting areas of ground training, and this undoubtedly is one reason for the general belief that the flight instruction is superior to the ground instruction. In order to cope with this situation, very explicit and detailed syllabi were prepared for all courses. Almost all essential information is presented by the lecture method. A number of training films and a variety of demonstration materials and special training devices are also used.
