Abstract:

As part of a program concerned with the influence of surface properties of glass on the behavior of reinforced plastics, we report here on an electron microscope study of aqueous attack on glass. Micrographs of E and 994 glasses, treated in solution of pH 2 through 11, are shown and a discussion of these micrographs is given. The effects of large scale phase separation in these glasses are discussed and plausible mechanisms for aqueous attack on these glasses are given. A detailed discussion of glass structure and a survey of earlier work on chemical attack is given in the introduction. An alternative approach to the boric oxide anomaly is also suggested. Author
