Abstract:
Twenty-eight neurologically and medically normal Air Force males between the ages of 18 and 23 years underwent unilateral caloric stimulation of the labyrinth while the brain waves were monitored by the electroencephalograph. In addition, eye movements were recorded by electro-oculograph, and all bioelectric signals were recorded in FM mode on magnetic tape. The brain waves were then digitized and analyzed on digital computer with an auto- and cross-correlation program. The results of the study show that unilateral caloric stimulation of the labyrinth has no significant effect on the alpha activity generators on either side of the brain. Further, those neuronal circuits responsible for maintaining calorically induced nystagmus do not significantly alter those neuronal circuits which generate alpha activity. Lastly, no phase shift between bilateral alpha activity could be induced by the unilateral caloric stimulation of the labyrinth. Author
