Abstract:

Gas diffusion and electrolyte concentration phenomena have been studied by varying thicknesses of the layers from which thin electrodes are constructed. Air cathodes showed a more pronounced response to thickness of the layers than did hydrogen anodes. The effect of a wetted porous layer in front of the electrode is to reduce cell output, but not in a linear fashion. The principal design features of a 6-volt, 100-watt air-hydrogen fuel cell are described. Tests on single cells of the same size are reported, and the test program for the batteries is outlined accordingly. Author
