Abstract:
Computing machines have recently given prominence to a primitive method of obtaining the values of a singular integral. In this method, one merely applies an ordinary rule of approximate integration and ignores the singularity. This paper is a study of the theoretical and numerical aspects of this method. It is found that on the whole, the method is theoretically sound and good answers can be obtained. But there are also cases in which answers cannot be obtained and borderline cases in which it may not be clear after a lengthy computation what value should be accepted as the answer. Author
