PERMANENT SOUTH POLE STATION. DESIGN LIMITATIONS AND CONCEPTS.
NAVAL CIVIL ENGINEERING LAB PORT HUENEME CALIF
A preliminary review is presented of the construction limits affecting the final design of a permanent 25-man station at the South Pole and the evaluation of 12 possible design concepts. The three principal limits selected as those which will have the greatest effect on the final design of the station are 1 logistical requirements, 2 construction season and 3 construction force. For valuation of design concepts three station types--below grade, at grade and above grade, and four station layouts-train, semi-train, dispersed and composite, were considered. These 12 combinations were evaluated against ten station elements--mission and operation, construction effort, space utilization, structures, water supply, sanitation, air conditioning, fire protection, fuel and supply handling, and power generation and distribution. Tables delineating the advantages and disadvantages introduced by each element for each concept are given. Author
