Abstract:
The technical notion of diagram as employed by the category-theorists is used to define the concept of abstract block diagram. The bulk of the report is concerned with the study of the collection D of block diagrams whose inputoutput functions belong to a preassigned function algebra. It is shown that D may be given the structure of substitution algebra by appropriate definitions of evaluation, substitution and contraction operators. In addition, a brief survey is made of the current literature concerning general input output systems.
