FREQUENCY CONVERTER UNITS FOR L-BAND, S-BAND, C-BAND, AND X-BAND.

A second L-band double-balanced converter was fabricated as a step toward establishing a final manufacturable design. Some problems of mechanical stability were encountered, but the results indicate that the characteristics of the initial unit can be satisfactorily reproduced. The noise figure of this unit was measured at 12 db three db within the specified limit. An S-band double-balanced converter, based on the same design approach as that used in the L-band unit, was fabricated and tested. Except for minor deviations, it meets the conversion loss and VSWR requirements in both S- and K-band. The development of double-balanced converters for X- and C-bands is being conducted in parallel. Serious difficulty has been experienced, but the most recent results are encouraging. The central problem is to meet the 31 VSWR specification over the C- and X-bands. Plans for the manufacture of forty deliverable frequency converters are being formulated. Author
