Abstract:

The validity of survey interviews is investigated in order to examine various respondent motivations. A model of interpersonal interaction in the interview is developed by deriving con ditions which further or hinder the motivated responses, and specific measures are built into the interview to measure the relative strength of each process. Conclusions resulting from the completed survey are stated in quantitative form, and a method to check on the interview process during the data collection is predicted.
