Abstract:

This evaluation of the TDU-20B, foam target was conducted to determine its suitability for use as a tow target during aerial gunnery training. Missions were conducted to determine target compatibility with the F-105 aircraft and the AA37U-15 tow subsystem, its aerodynamic characteristics, the effects of environmental conditions on the target, general handling and repair characteristics, and the effect of 20mm cannon fire. It was concluded that the TDU-20B foam target can be satisfactorily used in normal towing operations during aerial gunnery training missions. The testing revealed that this target is stable under all conditions of flight tested and that it has good bullet marking characteristics. In addition the target presents a minimum of 1 sq m effective radar cross-sectional area, and radar lock-on distances are at least three times those required for aerial gunnery practice, visual acquisition ranges during this test were from 1 12 to 2 12 miles, depending on aspect angle. Recommendations are made for modifications to the target to improve it structurally and to facilitate maintenance. Author
