Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to describe the carbonate petrology and petrography of limestone fragments collected in submarine samples taken from the Campeche Bank, Yucatan Shelf, Mexico. The specific points considered are 1 the interpretation of the more recent geologic history of the Yucatan Shelf, especially immediately before and during the Holocene Flandrian transgression 2 the relationship between the areal distribution of different textural types of limestones and certain bathymetric and topographic features of the submerged portion of the Yucatan Platform and 3 a qualitative discussion of diagenetic processes in carbonate rocks based on the petrographic examination and analysis of the limestone fragments from this area. Prior to this study, the majority of material examined with respect to diagenetic changes has been from strata of relatively ancient geologic ages, and the exact processes of alteration have been postulated from an end product, rather than from a carbonate rock in which such changes have as yet to reach completion.
