Abstract:
Fragments recovered from the deck of the USS HENRY W. TUCKER DDR 875 after detonation of a foreign projectile during a shore bombardment were subjected to metallurgical and chemical examination, and were also examined to determine the size and shape of the projectile from which they came, as well as whether there was any indication of intentional control of fragmentation. Positive identification of the shell from the fragments examined is not possible, since any size from 40 to 76mm would fit the data. However, it is similar in many respects to the Russian 45mm APHE PROJECTILE DESCRIBED IN A PREVIOUS Army report, and may well be a companion high capacity projectile.
