Abstract:

The hazard studies have shown that it is necessary to operate the system at some pressure such as 200 p.s.i. This was previously reported but is verified by static tests described here. The maintenance of pressure by a gas cushion on one fluid or on both fluids would not seem to make any difference relative to the pressure front damage done. This report shows that a normal relief valve operating on the gas phase used to maintain pressure on the liquid system prevents the rise in pressure in a normal manner, even though considerable distance exists between the point of the reaction and the gas cushion. Although the permissible distance between the points of reaction and the relief valve have not been investigated nor the effect of the size of the pipe or conduit between the two, it would appear that the usual relief valve practice can take care of hydrogen evolution from the reaction between NaK and water.
