SMALL-SCALE MODEL STUDY TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF SAWKERFS AND BORED RECESSES ON LOAD-CARRYING CAPACITY OF RIGID PAVEMENT

Full-scale pavement was simulated in the model tests by Hydrostone slabs 0.200 inch in thickness by 16 34 inches square, supported by a natural rubber subgrade. For the range of prototype conditions represented by the model, the test results indicated the following 1 A recess of any depth tends to lower the load-carrying capacity of a slab. Depending on the type of fixture, the load-carrying capacity could be reduced as much as 39 by extending the recess completely through the slab. 2 Sawkerfs perpendicular to the edge tend to reduce the load-carrying capacity of a slab, the amount of reduction being dependent on the depth of the sawkerfs. 3 In a slab containing a recess, a sawkerf, or both, the stress per pound of load is constant throughout the elastic range of the slab and subgrade. 4 Crack patterns associated with the initial failure of a plain slab and a slab containing a recess are practically identical. 5 Cracking associated with the complete failure of a slab containing a recess is more extensive than that associated with a plain slab. 6 With a recess near the edge and completely through a slab, critical stresses may develop at the edge of the recess rather than at the edge of the slab.
