Abstract:
A method suitable for the structural design of high pressure multi-cylinder apparatus is developed in this report. Although the design equations are derived on the basis of elasticity theory, considerable attention has been devoted to the selection of the appropriate yield criterion, and to the study of the elastic breakdown mode and the bursting mode of failures. A crude attempt is made to evaluate qualitatively the stress redistribution in the elasto-plastic regions. The use of these equations is illustrated by the design calculations for a five-layer multicylinder apparatus capable of developing internal pressures of 40 kilobars. The limitations of the method are discussed in the light of the simplifying assumptions made. It is hoped that the method can provide high pressure apparatus designers with useful qualitative, and perhaps even quantitative, indications for further investigations. Additionally, the ground-work laid for the present simple treatment can serve as a basis for the development of a more rigorous and sophisticated model. Author
