Abstract:

The purpose of this project is to develop design techniques for three groups of compensated crystal oscillators operating in the frequency range of 1 to 20 megacycles with design goal frequency temperature stabilities of or - 1 x 10 to the -7th power and or - x 10 to the -8th power over specified ambient temperature ranges. Experimental results obtained on the three Group II oscillator units which were delivered to Electronics Command during this quarter are presented. The effects of loading and voltage regulation on unit performance are discussed. Representative frequency temperature measurement are shown to demonstrate the repeatability characteristics of the three units during and after compensation. A discussion of preliminary results of the aging experiment is given. Representative characteristics of the aging units are presented. These indicate the need for accumulating more aging data on oscillator units to determine the long term effects and the repeatability of frequency temperature characteristics. The mechanical layout of the Group III oscillator units was initiated during this quarter. These units will be built to fit inside a GFE oven. Since the oven parameters have yet to be specified, this layout has remained on a tentative basis.
