Abstract:
Preliminary studies of elastohydrodynamic lubrication considering a visco-elastic lubricant are reported. A numerical solution using a simplified Maxwell model is developed. Results are obtained for a lubricant having a shear modulus up to 500 lbsq, in. The pressure distributions show absence of sharp peaks which are shown to exist in the elastohydrodynamic theories considering a Newtonian lubricant. The complete stress-deformation relationship is also derived and the validity of the simplified Maxwell model is examined. In addition, a method is described to estimate the shear modulus of a lubricant from measurements of friction between two disks and friction data for two types of lubricants under a wide range of speeds and loads are included.
