Abstract:
This paper reports the results of laser pulse oscillator-power amplifier experiments. Conclusions are presented with respect to the gain, gain saturation and cross relaxation effects in the laser amplifiers. In particular, the amplificaton of narrow band and broadband input spectral fluxes is examined. This is accomplished by using calcium tungstateneodymium and glassneodymium as the narrow band and broadband oscillator signal respectively. The amplifiers used in these experiments used glassneodymium as the laser media. The results obtained lead to the important conclusion, within the confines of the experiment, that efficient amplification of narrow band spectral fluxes can occur and that high average power laser amplifier chains are feasible. Hence, this approach provides a means for obtaining a coherent optical transmitter. Author
