Abstract:
The possible error induced by thermogravitational diffusion in a binary flotation fluid of a floated gyroscope is considered. An analytic expression is derived to give the species separation occurring in a narrow spherical, or cylindrical, gap when there is a uniform temperature change across the gap in the presence of a gravity field. This solution is used to estimate the possible drift rate produced by this mechanism in a gyro. The result is expressed as a function of time, geometry, and the fluid properties of the flotation mixture. The predicted drift rates are of the order of 0.1 deghr and appear to be consistent with drift rates experienced in the laboratory. Author
