Abstract:
Studies have been made recently on the frequency of induced mutations. with particular attention to useful forms. It was found that depending on the species and the dosage of the mutagenic factor, the variety of the plant and other factors, the frequency of induced mutations is 10-90 times greater than spontaneous mutations in wheat and 90-100 times greater in tomatoes. In analyzing the economic value of the artificial mutations it was found in one experiment that of the 267 mutants of Novosibirskaya-7 wheat 32.6 had improved qualities and 10.6 were poorer ratio of the former to the latter was 3.1 while the others were of no practical interest. In another experiment with Milturum-553, among the 889 mutants produced by ionizing radiation, 51.7 were useful and 24.3 poorer ratio 21. The ratio of improved to deteriorated forms fluctuated between 10 and 138 and stood at 0.4 in only one case. Thus material from 5000 mutations showed a marked predominance of economically useful ones. Author
