Title:
THE BEHAVIOR AND DESIGN OF BRITTLE STRUCTURES.
Corporate Author:

Report Date:

Abstract:
A re-examination of the weakest link hypothesis led to the establishment of a conservative design and analysis capability which is applicable to any isotropic brittle material. Associated with this capability are several new fundamental approaches including statistical estimation theory and proof testing which are thoroughly exploited in this report. An improved data base is established for further work in statistical fracture theory through the use of a nine element study involving two thousand hydrostone plaster specimens. A number of techniques were developed to extend the scope of our design algorithm to include thermal shock and random loading problems. Preliminary elevated temperature data were obtained for alumina and titanium diboride. Author
