Title:
EXPLORATORY DEVELOPMENT WORK ON FAMILIES OF WELDED FITTINGS FOR ROCKET FLUID SYSTEMS.
Corporate Author:

Report Date:
1965-10-01
Abstract:
A 14-month program was conducted to develop equipment and procedures for fabricating rocket fluid systems by automatic fusion welding techniques. Extensive tooling for in-place welding and maching was designed and built. Weldability studies were conducted on AISI 347 stainless steel and 6061-T6 aluminum in the 18- to 3-in. dia and 0.010- to 0.250-in. wall thickness ranges. Limited studies were conducted which established the feasibility of extending the concepts developed for 1- to 4-in. dia tubing to 4- to 16-in. dia tubing. Simulated in-place repair studies were conducted on selected tube sizes in the 14- to 3-in. dia range to demonstrate field usage capabilities and to define problems arising during fabrication of rocket fluid systems under conditions of restricted accessibility. A Proposed Military Technical Order detailing the equipment, procedures, and process control requirements for installation of welded fittings in rocket fluid systems was prepared on the basis of the work completed under this development program.
