Abstract:

A study of the combustion of solid propellants was undertaken to develop a procedure to evaluate the degree of combustion when various additives are added to the composition of the fuel. The focal point of the study is the emission spectrum of the flame. The relative intensity of the lines will be used to evaluate the degree of combustion. Preliminary results of experiments in which the propellant strand was burned in air did not give reproducible results. The design principles and preliminary design were developed for a versatile apparatus which permits the burning of propellant strands up to 6 ft. in length. The apparatus consists of an automatic propellant feed mechanism which advances the propellant into the combustion bomb. An optical-electronic control system regulates the rate of advance to keep the point of burning fixed. Author
