Abstract:

The sodium polyphosphates represent an ideal bridge between the linear organic polymers and the highly cross-linked inorganic glasses. In an attempt to elucidate which of two possible relaxation mechanisms bond interchange or molecular flow is responsible for the viscoelastic behavior of this polymer, NaPO3x samples possessing various terminal groups were studied by the technique of stress relaxation. The results indicate that molecular flow is predominant in the linear materials, while bond interchange at the branch points is prevalent in the crosslinked samples. Simple molecular flow was confirmed for the linear material when a radiotracer study failed to reveal any sign of interchange between inactive high polymer and radioactive low polymer. Author
