Report Date:

Abstract:
The purpose of this report is to describe a capability of conducting the probability distribution analysis of complex time variant functions using equipment available at NAVAIRDEVCEN together with interface circuitry developed in the laboratory. The probability distribution analysis system developed here is of special interest as a tool for making signal structure comparisons and for evaluating sonar signal processing equipments. Such analyses are of interest when dealing with data of a statistical nature, such as the random processes of sonar signals effected by the media. The importance of determining the probability density functions and error probabilities becomes evident when detection threshold levels must be set or signal processing techniques must be selected. The equipment is described briefly and diagrams of the interface circuits are given. Some applications for the equipment are given and the results of an analysis of two test signals are discussed. From the successes attained to date in analyzing the test signals it is concluded that the probability distribution analysis system has the capability of describing the probability density functions required for computation of sonar system detection capability.
