Report Date:

Abstract:

Materials - their preparation, structure and properties - vitally concern almost every department of the Schools of Science, Engineering, and Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Materials occupy the attention of a large fraction of the research effort of the Institude in diverse research groups and laboratories, each with its own approach and purpose. Such diversity is clearly needed because of the multiple facets of materials research, and the multiple applications of materials. Yet there is a certain community of techniques, ideas, and problems which tend to unite the field, and which make active communication and cooperation between those concerned with its various parts of particular importance. The present annual report on research at MIT in the field of materials represents this community. It endeavors to provide both an over-all view of the activities in the field and sufficient specific information to be useful to the specialist. Author
