Abstract:
A single crystal of dysprosium was found to have the largest magnetostrictive effect ever reported. Neutron diffraction studies reveal the presence of anisotropic unpaired spin densities in canted antiferromagnetic systems. In PbS the effective mass was shown to deped significantly upon carrier concentration and temperature and the band structure was shown to have four valleys in the conduction band. Two conduction bands have been found in SnTe. Improved epitaxial films have permitted optical studies of the lead salt semiconductors from the quartz ultraviolet region to 4mm in the microwave region. A new scattering mechanism, independent of temperature has been discovered in these films. A significant technical advance has been made permitting rolling sheets of Sendust as thin as 0.011 inch.
