Title:
FORMABILITY OF EXPERIMENTAL MARAGING STEELS.
Corporate Author:

Report Date:

Abstract:
A study was initiated to compare the forming characteristics of seven experimental maraging steels yield strengths of 140 to 225 ksiwith those of the present HY-80 submarine-hull steel on the basis of the amount of bending at onset of cracking and the true-strain produced on the tension surface of the bend specimen. The results showed that the 38- and 3-in. wide specimens of HY-80 steel and 38-in. wide specimens of maraging steels with 2 exceptions for extremely brittle materials could be bent flat part angle of 0 degrees whereas the 3-in. wide specimens of the maraging steels cracked at part angles greater than 135 degrees. The results indicated that formability comparisons should be made on specimens wide enough so that bending occurs under conditions of plane strain. Author
