Abstract:
This project was established to determine requirements for field fuel analysis and inspection capabilities by Marine bulk fuel handling units and to recommend fuel testing equipment suitable for expeditionary use to meet these requirements. It was recommended that field testingbe limited to detection of water and sediment with a minimum capability test kit to accomplish this testing. The kit proposed was based on the assumption that both the Amphibious Assault Fuel System AAFS and the Tactical Air Fuel Dispensing System TAFDS would receive fuel on which full specification testing had been performed and that a relatively short period of time would have elapsed between shipping from a control point and the point of consumption. No consideration was given to the possibility that the fuel to be used might have been prepositioned for an undetermined length of time, could possibly be captured stores, or be delivered by means which would preclude full specification testing at its origin. Further, fuel could be contaminated to a degree unacceptable for use in aircraft, but could be used in ground vehicles. It was concluded that additional equipment is required to permit satisfactory use of the TAFDS fuel test kit in the field. Author
