Abstract:
A larger Simons cell has been constructed for use in the preparation of sufficient amounts of CF3-SF4-CF2-CF2-SF4-CF3 and CF2SF43. The cell is now operating, and the fluorination of strithiane was carried out in an attempt to prepare the perfluorinated compound CF2SF43. A new method is being used in an attempt to prepare pentafluorophenysulfur pentafluoride, by reacting C6F5MgBr and SF5C1. Correlations have been made to determine the effect of structure on the viscosity-temperature relationship. Although it is realized that other important variables such as molecular weight must be included in order to make the correlations complete, certain trends are evident 1 aromatic compounds are better than cyclics 2 esters seem to be better than substituted paraffins 3 the -CH-CF-SF5 groups seem to be desirable and 4 ethers and OSF5 compounds do not look promising.
