Abstract:
A successfhod has been developed to measure the counter-emf, including a short transient, in fused sodium hydroxide after electrolysis. The counter-emf was postulated to be E sub t A B Log t C where A, B, and C are measured con stants. Data taken at 500 and 600 C confirm the mathematical model. The departure from the pre dicted behavior which occurred at 400 C is possi bly due to a non-chemical process. A comparison of data taken at 600 C using both radioactive and stable anodes indicates that radioactivity lowers the cell counter-emf. It is possible that this is attributable to a capacitance effect. Calcu lated values for A, B, and C, and the initial counter-emf are included for each temperature observed. Author
